Contrary to popular opinion, fat loss is only one of two necessary elements in producing a toned, fit appearance. In fact, the many who avoid resistance training in their pursuit for permanent body fat reduction not only fail to achieve a desired level of muscle tone, but actually detract from their overall physical appeal (due to loose skin, sagging muscles, etc). Improving muscle tone requires short, infrequent periods of resistance training, and those who avoid such exercise will not only fail to sufficiently firm visible muscle groups, but also circumvent the fat loss process! Small increases in muscle cause a surge in metabolism (the rate at which you burn calories), which greatly enhances the speed at which you burn fat! Although most associate resistance training with the bulging bodybuilder, you are actually in complete control of overall results. In fact, the term "muscle tone" describes building minor levels of new muscle, yet many mistakenly believe it is merely synonymous with significant body fat reduction (which is certainly necessary for muscle tone, but the muscle must also improve in order for tone to exist). Since you can avoid training with heavy, bulky weights, the desired "muscle tone" is achieved without significant muscle size increases (although, in reality, you are actually building small levels of new muscle which contribute to a "toned" body structure).
In summary, resistance exercise is an often neglected activity which aids in permanent, rapid fat loss and muscle tone!
